HEALTH & SAFETY

The beginning of 2008 saw us commiting to add to our ISO standard in Quality, by working towards the ISO standards for Health & Safety – OHSAS18001 and Environmental Management – ISO14001 and thankfully, after assessment, achieving both in December with zero non-conformances.

We had already achieved Safe Contractor status in 2007 and all our operatives were CSCS qualified, but we felt that an ISO standard in Health and Safety could give us much more experience in our responsibilities for working safely and operating machinery safely and would also give our customers absolute confidence that we can work on any given site with any given set of circumstances.

On all jobs we create a risk assesment, prior to commencement of the works, submitted to the customer, detailing all potential risks or hazards which may be have some effect on ourselves, other tradesmen and members of the public. Each risk is graded to make everybody aware of how and in which way to work the most safely; this is assessed continually throughout the course of the contract.

By establishing an OH&S management system and employing a H&S manager, we have been able to eliminate or minimise risk to employees and other interested parties who may be affected by Distinctive Decorating Services' activities.

Our Overall Objective is and will remain as a target of 0% accident recording and the OHSAS18001 standard will help us to maintain that.

THE ENVIRONMENT

The environmental standard for the business is something we were unable to achieve until we moved to our new premises in June 2008. This was due to a lack of facilities available to us for the waste management side of the ISO program.

ISO 14001 was somewhat of an unknown entity for us at the beginning of the process but, we soon realised that it is one of the most important elements in sustaining our business and gives us a real insight into the harmful effects a business's activities can have on the environment.

The standard specifies requirements for establishing an environmental manager, environmental policy, determining environmental aspects and impacts of products/activities/services, planning environmental objectives and measurable targets, implementation and operation of programs to meet objectives and targets, checking and corrective action, and periodic management reviewing.

The overall idea is to establish an organised approach to systematically reduce the impact of the environmental aspects which our company can control, such as continually reducing waste and re-using material containers, segregation and recycling of waste where possible.

We also try to make customers aware of the availablity of eco-friendly paints and encourage them also to recycle and reduce their waste.
