Projects
Co-op Longmoor Lane Aintree
This store was originally a Somerfield and is part of the re-branding to Co-op.
This was a particularly interesting project for us, as most of the Co-op stores we have worked on have been scattered around the country. This one was right on our doorstep so there was a desire to get it absolutely spot on!
Due to the brand new design concepts from Co-op, the majority of the work we had to do was to the exterior of the building, as most internal walls are ply lined with pre-finished black and beige panelling now(which does look very nice).
The store remained open during the first 2 weeks, so we were asked to work with customers in mind so, we were very careful with displaying wet paint signs and barriering off areas in which we were working.
We started on site cleaning the high level cladded soffit, which over the years had become grimey. This required the use of a scissor lift and a diesel powered high pressure washer. The scissor had to be operated by one of our IPAF qualified tradesmen. Once that was complete it was down to the decoration. All of the external doors, shutters, soffits, fascia panels, bollards etc, were cleaned and undercoated in the first 3 days. These had be done twice as the colours were changing from black and grey to white and yellow. Once undercoated, we started glossing using Dulux Weathershield for the doors and fascia boards and Dulux Metalshield for the bollards, shutters, soffits and grills.
When the store closed, we started on the interior work which involved spraying the false ceiling, emulsioning of the pillars and ceiling braces, some perimeter walls, bakery, food prep and back of house offices. Once that was complete we carried out all of the glosswork to the same areas. We completed our work ahead of schedule and vacated the site in time for the racking and merchandising by Co-op staff.

Waitrose, Menai Bridge, Anglesey
This store was originally a Co-op and has been acquired by Waitrose.
This was the first Waitrose job for us and we were very much looking forward to it getting underway. After the initial site visit to meet with the project director, we were given the programme of works. It was highlighted within the programme that it was a fairly tight schedule and that our works would see us on site for approximately 3 weeks, with 4 men needed to carry out our works within the scope.
We advised the contractor that we were to use dulux paints throughout the contract and supplied our Risk assesments, Method statement and Coshh assesments to site for the Health and Safety file.
The intial phase of works was centred around the strip out and associated external excavation works, which involved a large amount of heavy plant and machinery.
Because of these works taking place, we decided to start on the east elevation of the building, painting the render to the walls. After 2 days we were able to start mist coating the dry lining internally, using aluminium scaffold and a scissor lift to reach the high parts of the store. We had qualified PASMA operatives on site to faciltate the erecting of the scaffold and an IPAF qualified operative for the use of the scissor lift.
The offices and back of house areas were next to be painted. These rooms involved a lot of preparation work and alot of consideration of the other trades people working within the same vicinity.
Once the dry lining and tape and jointing was complete on the salesfloor, we were able to start prepping and mist coating the new surfaces. This invloved all 4 members of our team as we didn't have very long to complete. The paint which was requested to be used was an Acrylic eggshell, so we needeed to give the walls 3 coats to satisfy the client.
For the last week or so, we had to work outside of the initial programme and alongside the senior project managers, as the site was very busy with trades people all around. On request, we integrated into a daily programme which saw us working in all corners of the store, to help the contract continue to move forward at pace. This proved our adaptability to circumstances out of our control and in light of working closely with the key people on site, we were granted a "Platinum Card" for impeccable site behaviour and quality of workmanship. We were pleased to find later, that they do not give out these awards out often, which pleased us immensely.
All in all, this proved to be a very good job for us and we have been promised more work in light of the positive feedback we have received by all levels of the clients' ops team

Daniel House, Bootle, for Mason Owen
We were asked by Mason Owen to decorate the Daniel House Office block in Bootle, Liverpool. It was the first time we had the opportunity to work for Mason Owen and we were very keen to impress, as they are a highly reputable company and we were proud they chose us for the works. A lot of the building was recently vacated by HSE and they were looking for the 3 staircases in the building to be re-decorated in order to appeal to prospective new tenants.
The staircases had recently been installed with PVC windows, so there was a significant area around each reveal which had fresh plaster and the rest of the window walls were quite badly affected by water damage, presumed to be from when the original windows were in. The specification was to scrape down and seal all affected walls with alkalai sealer, mist coat all new plaster work with eclipse emulsion and then give all ceilings two coats of vinyl matt, the walls two coats of vinyl soft sheen, the skirted trim grey undercoat and black gloss and the lobby doors and handrails in clear varnish.
Because the premises were still occupied on many of the floors, we agreed that the best method to carry out the work safely would be to concentrate on one staircase at a time, closing it down and advising people of alternative routes down through the building. This worked very well for both us and the tenants and enabled us to complete the contract within 3 weeks as opposed to 4 as we originally thought. When finished, we were very happy with the the work we had done. It was hard graft for everyone involved on the job with a great amount of walking up and down stairs throughout the day. The fact that we were given very positive feedback from Mason Owen during hand over made it all worth while.

Rapid Hardware, Basnett St, Liverpool
We were approached by Rapid whilst decorating a Tesco Express store, adjacent to their
old premises. The enquiry was to price for the external painting of their new store in Basnett
Street, Liverpool. This project was something that we very much wanted to get invloved in as
Rapid is a very well known, local family hardware business and the premises they have located to
were once the George Henry Lee store (John Lewis Partnership) and are very well known in the area
with a significant amount of foot flow past the store from Church Street to Williamson Square
and all around towards the St Johns Centre.
The scope of work was to give the exterior of the store a fresh look, whilst keeping the original feel of the property.
There were also some minor works within the main stairwell of the building.
Once we were given the go-ahead, we applied for the license to use our mobile scaffold structure and started
discussions with the Rapid management, regarding the colours to be used.
As the new store was having a large amount of internal shop fitting, with full bathrooms and
kitchens being installed, we agreed with Rapid that it be best for us to start on the exterior, moving inside when things had slowed down on the inside.
Rapid asked for a black and white colour scheme, changing from the John Lewis green, also to tie in with the new signage which they are installing.
We recommended the use of Dulux Weathershield, undercoat and gloss and proceeded in undercoating all of the window frames, panels, sills, shutters and fascia in dark grey undercoat. Once we had undercoated all around, we started on the gloss work.
Once the gloss work was complete, we set to work on the Georgian entrance doors, for which we recommended the use of Sikkens exterior Filter 7 woodstain. This was on the basis of keeping the original appearance of the beautiful wooden surfaces, but with a cleaner, brighter, more durable finish.
Once the shopfitting had been completed we moved to the inside.

Tesco Express, Bold Street, Liverpool
We were appointed by Vale Uk Ltd, to carry out the decoration to the new Tesco Express store at the top of Bold Street, Liverpool. The specification was to decorate all areas of the store to the Tesco colour scheme using Dulux emulsions and oil based paints. The job started with all newly plastered, taped and jointed surfaces throughout the building being mist coated with Macphersons Eclipse emulsion.
As we had 5 tradesmen on site at the beginning of the job, we were able to pretty much start all areas at the same time, so that once the installations were going in, we knew that we would have a minimum amount in each area to complete if we had to vacate for the access of other trades. As always with retail projects, you have to expect the inconvenience of traffic through your work area. The general environment is always hectic, so it was a case of fitting in and painting what you can, where possible. Once all of the fridges and racking were installed we proceeded in completing the sales floor, the rear staircase and glossed the arched front windows, finishing the contract within the 3 week timescale, as requested by Vale.
